Rahaf

This piece features the Arabic calligraphy of my daughter’s name, Rahaf. Rahaf (رهف) is a feminine Arabic name derived from the root R-H-F, which means “to be thin, fine, or delicate.” It is often understood as delicacy, tenderness, subtlety, or grace. The name carries qualities of refinement, softness, and beauty, reflecting a gentle and sensitive nature.

In our world today, we often hear that one must be thick skinned, that softness is not practical. Yet when I think of the legacies of Prophet Jesus, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and so many others, I am reminded that gentleness and compassion are among the most powerful forces for change. Perhaps what we truly need is more softness, not less.
